Sleep problems and melatonin

Melatonin is easier to get from a pharmacy than it used to be. Talk to one of our pharmacists about whether it’s right for you, and how to use it.

What melatonin does

Melatonin is a hormone that helps control your sleep pattern and sleep–wake cycle. Your body makes more of it soon after dark, and levels are highest between about 2am and 3am. Light suppresses it, and we tend to make less of it as we get older.

Getting melatonin from a pharmacy

Since 2025, approved melatonin products can be supplied by a pharmacy without a prescription for short courses: up to 30 days for trouble sleeping, or up to 10 days for jet lag.

If you’re 55 or over, a pharmacist who has completed melatonin training can supply a larger pack, of up to 13 weeks, after a short consultation when it’s suitable.

Talk to us first

Ask one of our pharmacists before you buy. We’ll check melatonin suits you and any other medicines you take, and help you choose the right product. Melatonin works best for a short time, to help you get back into a good sleep habit.
